Kpop Star Profiles: Who Is Aziatix?

Three solo artists. One expert producer. And now signed to one of the biggest record labels in the US. Aziatix have come a long way, and the journey is just getting started.

When producer Jae Chong brought Aziatix together in 2010, no one could have guessed that in a few short years they would get one of the largest record deals in K-Pop history.

Sure, they had immediate success in Asia and other parts of the world with their original songs and unique blend of hip-hop and R&B, but Aziatix's recent deal with Cash Money Records has set their career on a whole new path.

Since their debut single "Go" was released in March of 2011, the Korean-American trio comprised of Nicky Lee, Eddie Shin, and Jay "Flowsik" Pak has seen tremendous success and have gained fans around the world.

Aziatix were named Best New Asian Artist Group at the Mnet Asian Music Awards in 2011, have toured the US and Japan, and have had the opportunity to work with some of the biggest names in music, from both sides of the Pacific.

The group's 2012 mini album, Awakening, reached number one on both the US and Japan iTunes charts and was a nice follow-up to their debut EP, AZIATIX, which hit number four on the US R&B/Soul iTunes chart. Not to mention, their music videos for "Go" and "Slippin' Away" alone have raked in over 2 million of their more than 6.5 million hits on YouTube.

Their latest achievement came in February of this year when it was announced Aziatix had signed to legendary record label Cash Money, and that they would be working with famed producer RedOne for their upcoming album set to be released later this year.

What exactly makes their careers so promising that Cash Money offered them an $11.3 million contract?

For starters, talent. All three members had thriving careers before joining forces - Eddie, an accomplished songwriter; Nicky, a pop sensation in Taiwan; and Flowsik, a skilled rapper with a unique voice.

"We each started out as solo artists, but we wanted to try out new things," explained Flowsik in a CNN interview shortly after the group's debut. "Our producer had a vision of forming this group after seeing what we were capable of doing."

Bridging that difficult gap between the Asian market and the mainstream US market is another element that sets Aziatix apart from the rest. With initial success starting in Asia, they quickly grew up their following and now have millions of fans (Aziaddicts) across the globe.

Sandy Monteiro, president of Universal Music Group International in South East Asia, said in an interview with the Guardian that the language barrier is a big factor in the success of an Asian group outside of Asia because "music fans in those markets would just be too critical about the lyrics and the acts' accents when singing in English." And that idea has been echoed by many other music industry professionals over the years.

Back in their native US, Eddie, Nicky, and Flowsik do not have to worry about overcoming the language barrier that so many of their contemporaries are challenged to do, a distinction that gives Aziatix an edge in the increasingly competitive music industry.

An unmeasurable amount of talent, a close relationship with many people in the biz with proven track records of creating hits, and a highly anticipated new album in the works - the next phase of their careers is now.  And 2013 is already shaping up to be another stellar year for Aziatix.
