BLACKPINK Jennie "SOLO" Becomes Most Streamed Song by a Korean Soloist on Spotify

BLINKs, your queen Jennie has just broken another record! As of October 16, Friday, Jennie's debut solo song "SOLO" is the most streamed song by a Korean soloist on Spotify.

The record was previously held by former YG Entertainment labelmate PSY with "Gangnam Style".As of the time of writing, Jennie has surpassed 240, 886,073 streams with "SOLO". "Gangnam Style", on the other hand, currently has 240,690,315 streams. Previously, the record was held by PSY for eight years.

To celebrate Jennie's achievement, fans started the hashtag #RECORDSETTERJENNIEKIM. Some have recalled that in the Netflix documentary, "BLACKPINK: Light Up The Sky", Jennie confessed that she wanted people to see their potential and that she continued to train in YG Entertainment for years because she wanted people to see that she was worth it. "SOLO" was released on November 12, 2018. According to Jennie, the song is about how when people date, they tend to present themselves as what the other person wants rather than yourself. The song talks about becoming free from that feeling following a breakup. The digital single album was released on November 18, 2018. The song was written by Teddy Park and was co-produced by him and 24. The song is described as a dance song with hip-hop influences.

A music video was released simultaneously to the drop of the digital album and was uploaded onto BLACKPINK's official YouTube channel. The music video was filmed in the United Kingdom and show Jennie's growth from a demure, timid girl to a strong, independent woman. The music video was directed by Han Sa Min. Currently, the music video has accumulated over 548 million streams.

Upon the song's debut, "SOLO" topped all the major music charts. On the Gaon Charts, it stayed in the top 10 for 13 consecutive weeks and spent 33 weeks in the top 100. The digital release peaked at number two on the Gaon Charts, making it the 100th best-selling album of 2018. "SOLO" was named as the 86th and the 35th best-performing song in 2018 and 2019 respectively. Additionally, the song was certified platinum by the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA) for surpassed 100 million streams on June 6, 2019, and again on March 12, 2020, for 2.5 million paid digital downloads.

The song peaked at the Billboard K-Hot Hot 100 on the chart at number one. It had previously dropped to number ten but bounced back to number one again. It spent 25 weeks on the chart. Additionally, it debuted at the top of the Billboard's World Digital Song Sales chart and spent 25 weeks on the chart as well.

"SOLO" peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100. The track also hit the singles charts in Canada, Scotland, and reached the United Kingdom's download chart and New Zealand's Hot Singles charts.

Jennie ultimately won three music show win for "SOLO", all on Inkigayo. She also performed the song at SBS Gayo Daejeon and in BLACKPINK's Coachella stage in 2018. In the 2020 Golden Disc Awards, "SOLO" won the Digital Bonsang. In 2018, "SOLO" was named "Song of the Month (November)".
