These K-pop Groups and Artists Won the Most 'Daesangs' From MAMA Through The Years
These K-pop groups and artists have the most awards from the MNET Asian Music Awards (MAMA)! This December, numerous year-end awards ceremonies will be coming back once again amidst the coronavirus pandemic, and the public interest in who's going to win this year's awards is rising massively.
In particular, on Sunday, December 6, one of the most prestigious awards ceremonies, MAMA 2020, will be held, which will be giving recognitions and acknowledgment to a new set of awardees again to the top artists that shined through the year in the field of music, arts, and culture.
Among the awards that will be given, media and music fans' interest is focused if which K-pop artist will be bringing home the honors for "Daesang" or the grand prize.
There are four "Daesangs" given each year, including "Artist of the Year," "Song of the Year," "Album of the Year," and "Worldwide Icon of the Year," and since 1999, these K-pop artists are the only groups who are honored to receive these awards, not only once, but multiple years, proving their influence and outstanding performance as artists.
Here are the K-pop Groups and Artists With Most Daesangs Won from MAMA through the years:
11. H.O.T (2 Daesangs)
H.O.T, is the first K-pop idol group and the "blueprint" for many K-pop idols that followed. In 1999 and 2000, the five-membered group is also the first group to win two Daesangs for "Best Popular Music Video" for two consecutive years.
10. BoA (2 Daesangs)
The "Queen of K-pop" boA, won two Daesangs as well in 2002 and 2004, for "Most Popular Music Video" and "Music Video of the Year", respectively.
9. SG Wannabe (2 Daesangs)
SG Wannabe is a vocal group that debuted in 2004, winning two Daesangs in 2006.
8. TVXQ (2 Daesangs)
TVXQ which debuted under SM entertainment and is known to be "Emperor of K-pop" gained two Daesangs in 2005 and 2008. These include, " Most Popular Music Video" in 2005, and "Album of the Year" for their hit album, "Mirotic."
7. G-Dragon (2 Daesangs)
Dubbed as the "King of K-pop", G-Dragon who is a member of BIGBANG is the first solo artist to win a Daesang in 2009 bringing home "Album of the Year" for his "Heartbreaker," and won "Artist of the Year" in 2013.
6. Super Junior (3 Daesangs)
The "King of Hallyu Wave" Super Junior became the "Artists of the Year" in 2007, got the "Album of the Year" for "Mr. Simple" in 2011, and won "Album of the Year" again for "Sexy, Free and Single" in 2013.
5. TWICE (3 Daesangs)
Deemed as "Reigniting the heat of K-pop in Japan" on their debut years, TWICE rose as one of the most successful K-pop group from third-gen.
In 2016, they received their first Daesang, "Song of the Year," and achieved it again in 2017 and 2018.
4. 2NE1 (4 Daesangs)
One of the most iconic among K-pop female groups, 2NE1, is also one of the first K-pop girl groups to win a Daesang in MAMA amidst the massive popularity of boy groups in their era.
In 2009, they received "Song of the Year" for their hit track, "I Don't care.
In 2010, they bagged two daesangs, "Song of the Year" and "Artist of the Year" and their last achieved award is "Song of The Year" for "I am the Best" in 2011, before their disbandment.
3. BIGBANG (5 Daesangs)
The OG "Kings of K-pop" BIGBANG is one of the groups that were recognized for their most influential acts to the spread of K-pop globally.
From 2007 to 2015, they gained five Daesangs including "Song of the Year" for "Lies" and numerous honors for "Artist of the Year."
2. EXO (6 Daesangs)
The "Nation's Pick" group EXO won six Daesangs from 2013 to 2017, since they last attended the ceremony.
In 2013, they received their first "Album of the Year Award" and won it again for four consecutive years. They received their first-ever "Artist of the Year" in 2014.
1. BTS (9 Daesangs)
The "Princes of Pop" BTS topped the list with 9 Daesangs from MAMA!
The "biggest boy band in the world" in this new K-pop era, achieved their first "Artist of the Year" award in 2016 and secured the title for three consecutive years until 2019.
They also achieved two "Album of the Year" in 2018 and 2019. Meanwhile, the newest title, "Worldwide Icon of the Year," was also received by BTS in the same years.
In 2019, BTS was awarded for "Song of the Year" for their hit track, "Boy With Luv."
