EDAM Entertainment, the agency representing popular singer IU, has presented evidence to counter claims made by Nordend Entertainment Publishing, the publishing company of German band NEKTA.

The plagiarism controversy surrounding IU's song "The Red Shoes" has taken a peculiar twist as both sides present conflicting accounts of their communication.

Nordend Entertainment Publishing Claims

Previously, Nordend Entertainment Publishing alleged that EDAM Entertainment never contacted them regarding the alleged similarities between "The Red Shoes" and NEKTA's "Here Is Us."

"With great astonishment, we have taken note of various articles in Korean media in which it is claimed that those responsible for the production had contacted us or the artist group NEKTA at the time and clarified the issue regarding copyright infringement.

This does not correspond to the truth! To date, neither the artist IU nor any official representative of LOEN Entertainment or EDAM Entertainment has contacted us or responded to our multiple attempts to contact them.”

They claimed that despite their attempts to reach out, neither IU nor any representative from LOEN Entertainment or EDAM Entertainment had responded to their inquiries.

“We, Nordend Entertainment Publishing, have already tried to get in touch in 2013 to discuss the matter together, however all our email and contacts remained unanswered. The inquiries regarding this matter are archived in our records.

Following the now newly published articles and statements by Mr. Cho Young-Cheol, we attempted to contact EDAM Entertainment on 28 May 2023 using the email addresses published on the website. This email has also gone unanswered so far.”

EDAM Entertainment Counterclaim

In response, EDAM Entertainment asserted that they had indeed received Nordend Entertainment Publishing's email and had responded to it.

To support their claim, the agency published an email they had sent to Nordend in 2013, addressing the matter. They also stated their intention to make the 2013 email sent by their lawyers public.

"We received Nordend Entertainment's message and replied to it. We will publish the 2013 email sent by lawyers."

The conflicting accounts between the two parties have created a contentious back-and-forth regarding the alleged plagiarism.

When the initial allegations surfaced, IU's label denied the accusations, emphasizing that the composition, melody, and chord ensembles of "The Red Shoes" and "Here Is Us" differed significantly.
