Actor Jim Kelly Dead: Cancer Claims Karate Martial Artist Known For 'Enter The Dragon' Role With Bruce Lee, ‘First Black Martial Artist To Become A Movie Star,’ Dies At 67

Actor Jim Kelly was pronounced dead on Sunday. The karate martial artist was famous for his career in action movies. He died from cancer at the age of 67 in his San Diego, California home.

Kelly's Facebook page posted the following announcement on Sunday: "It is with sadness and regret that we must announce the passing of a great man and legend Jim Kelly. He will be deeply missed by all. Jim had great love for his family, friends, tennis and martial arts. We are devastated by Jim's passing but through faith and support from family, friends and fans-we are comforted, blessed and will remain strong."

Kelly's former wife Marilyn Dishman told CNN that the actor died Saturday of cancer, CNN reports.

Kelly's most well-known role was in the 1973 Bruce Lee film "Enter the Dragon." He only made a brief appearance, but his memorable witty one-liners lines, big Afro and sideburns, and 6' 2" frame were many fans' favorite.

"It was one of the best experiences in my life," he told salon.com of working on "Enter the Dragon," The Huffington Post reports. "Bruce was just incredible, absolutely fantastic. I learned so much from working with him. I probably enjoyed working with Bruce more than anyone else I'd ever worked with in movies because we were both martial artists. And he was a great, great martial artist. It was very good."

Enter the Dragon is one of the most popular kung fu films of all time, according to the BBC. It was Bruce Lee's first movie in English, and was released just after his death at the age of 32.

In an interview with the LA Times in 2010, Kelly said: "I broke down the color barrier - I was the first black martial artist to become a movie star. It's amazing to see how many people still remember that, because I haven't really done much, in terms of movies, in a long time."

A year after "Enter the Dragon," Kelly starred in "Black Belt Jones." He was in a few other movies in the 1970s, but his career didn't last long in Hollywood.  Kelly eventually became a professional tennis player, and ranked on the USTA senior circuit, CNN reports.

In 2004, he starred with basketball legend Lebron James in a Nike commercial that spoofed another Bruce Lee film, "Game of Death."
