SISTAR vs. After School: The June Comeback Showdown

June featured a whole host of comebacks from some of K-Pop's most popular girl groups and two songs stood out among the rest.

SISTAR made their official summer comeback on June 11 with the song "Give it to Me" and it was an instant hit. The single shot to the top of the charts where it dominated for the remainder of the month, proving that the lovely ladies of SISTAR still got it.

"Give it to Me" is a feminine song with powerful vocals and a sultry tone. The four members' voices blend nicely together giving the tune a unique harmony different from other girl groups on the market at the moment.

The vibrant music video with its burlesque theme is both classy and seductive and SISTAR shines as a group of fierce performers.

And it seems like fans and critics also took notice.

Within two hours of release, "Give it to Me" achieved an 'all-kill,' reaching the number one spot on nine different music charts. The song rose to the top of the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 as well.

The song and stage performance also won SISTAR first place awards on the five major music programs, M! Countdown, Music Bank, Music Core, Inkigayo, and Show Champion, the last two weekends of the month.

That kind of reception and success is rare, especially these days when competition among female idol groups is so stiff and there is increasing pressure to 'out-sex' one another.

Which brings us to another girl group comeback from the past month, one that, for one reason or another, was not nearly as well-received as SISTAR's - After School's new single "First Love."

The song itself is smooth and feminine, an easy listen produced by famed industry professional Brave Brothers.

But where After School (and more specifically their agency Pledis Entertainment) went wrong was in the concept for the video and performance.

For a sweet little song about first love, the overtly sexual pole dance theme seems very much out of place. In fact, the hip thrusts and pole spinning is distracting and draws attention away from the actual music.

A fact that is probably to blame for After School's less than ideal chart performance. "First Love" made it to a peak position of number seven on both the GaOn and Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 charts.

Additionally, after six months of rehearsing in order to perfect the routine, both Lizzy and Nana suffered injuries leading to them having to be removed from promotional activities for some time while they recovered.

All of that hard work and not even a music program win to show for it - a disappointing comeback for After School who wound up not being up to snuff in the heated June competition.
