Review: Odd Eye Channels The Chill Out Vibe In Their Techno Homage 'Follow Me' [VIDEO]

There is not another K-pop group like Odd Eye.

Comprised of violinists MIKI and Hayule and cellist Eeum, the group has raised eyebrows simply for asking the rare question: can a string trio be a successful South Korean pop act?

Odd Eye's new single "Follow Me" appears to offer the most resounding yes to that question yet.

In the song, the group offers an ethereal sound with dynamic propulsion. Their voices are beautifully understated.

The musical context of "Follow Me" offers the trio a perfect opportunity to provide their trademark string harmonies, which they deliver with accuracy and feeling.

The production team of Yoon Mirae, Tiger JK, and Bizzy falls a bit short, considering the seemingly limitless potential of a group that can deliver as a classical string trio or as competent vocalists that don't feel the need to belt out a note to bring the song home.

But although Odd Eye's new song is a giant leap beyond their debut single, the Lady Gaga-influenced "Catch Me If You Can," the chill-out techno drum beat in "Follow Me" was worn out when Madonna used it 15 years ago on "Ray of Light."

And although the members of Odd Eye manage to dial in powerful dynamics with their instruments, the drumbeat remains static for the entire song, save for one bridge, when it strips down to the high hat and bass drum part.

If you can imagine what a boundary-breaking artist like Bjork would do to the rhythm of "Follow Me" if she were to choose to cover it, you have just put your finger on where the song could improve.

But the production on "Follow Me" is not a total wash. The Fender Rhodes keyboard playing is right on, dialing the rave era of the 1990s with a flare that manages to not feel clichéd. And there are some very well executed synthesizer swells.

Yet, it is difficult to not hold a group with what appears to be such strong potential as Odd Eye to a higher standard than you would just another girl group or boy band.

They are churning out pop music that is steadily earning them legions of fans, but teamed with a producer who's not afraid to break new ground, they have the talent to truly crate something earth shattering.
