Review: F.T. Island Strikes A Power Chord And Scores With 'Try Again' [AUDIO]

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

And the many tries regarding songs and styles for five-piece K-pop South Korean pop rock band F.T. Island appear to have paid off.

With "Try Again," the rocking new song from the group's "Thanks To" EP, released this week, F.T. Island has a chance to earn themselves an entirely new fan base.

The song has shades of 1970s classic rock giants Journey, Blue Oyster Cult and Bad Company with a bit of the modern sonic innovation of UK pop-prog rockers Muse.

While the majority of the songs on "Thanks To" tend to lean heavily towards the pop end of F.T. Island's self-affirmed pop-rock classification, "Try Again" is a balls to the wall rocker, complete with an anthemic hook and some ripping lead guitar work.

This listener is left wondering why a group with such highly developed rock chops does not dare to record more material of the pump-your-fist-in-the-air variety.

The answer (management, radio airplay, marketability, blah, blah, blah) is probably a disappointing one.

But none of that detracts from the power of "Try Again," of course.

The song opens with a few power chord hits reminiscent of Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger," immediately distinguishing itself as having a rage that is absent on the rest of the "Thanks To" EP.

The vocals frontman Lee Hongki lays down on "Try Again" are impressive to say the least.

In addition to demonstrating the formidable range of his voice, Lee delivers the infectious melody with an intensity only matched by guitarist and bandleader Choi Jonghoon's soaring leads.

There are nods to 1980s rock acts like the Cars or even Guns N' Roses in the way the guitar is shaped for maximum impact, letting loose a show-stopping flurry of notes or a soaring melody on cue.

The main question the members of F.T. Island need to answer, is now that they've proven they can punch out a solid stream of radio-friendly pop hits, are they ready to rock?
