Review: With Strong Melodic Hooks, Youme's 'Last One' Featuring Joosuc Could Be Another Hit From The 'Master's Sun' Soundtrack [AUDIO]

The pop hits keep coming for the soundtrack of the South Korean drama "Master's Sun."

Yoon Mi Rae's ballad "Touch Love," featured on the show, has been the number one song on the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 for the last three weeks.

Another "Master's Sun" soundtrack hit, "Crazy of You" from SISTAR singer Hyorin, is currently number five on the Billboard K-pop chart, after its own stint in the top position.

But with stronger, more memorable hooks than either of those songs, Youme's "Last One" featuring the rapper Joosuc, has the potential to be another mega-hit from the show's soundtrack.

Although the song does not head into sonic territory any more wild than your average Sarah McLachlan song, "Last One" is well-crafted pop executed by a singer with enough range to compete with any Western diva.

The one major adventurous move on "Last One" is the addition of Joosuc's edgy, aggressive rhymes.

Although this kind of rapping in a pop ballad is drastically more common in the world of K-pop, it is still a bracing contrast in the track and one that keeps it interesting.

Youme delivers the song's mournful melody with enough feeling to drive the point home, without reverting to melodramatic vocal acrobatics.

Instead, the melody is given the space to breathe, enhanced by tasteful production choices that place it front and center.

Even at the climax of Joosuc's rap, the song's melody still drifts behind the MC.

In this era of digital production where a simple sound can be made into an epic cacophony at the touch of a button, it is relieving to know that the melodic line is still king.

With all the glitz and glitter of big studio budgets and multi-million dollar music videos, Youme proves that an affecting melody, delivered clear and pure, still trumps all of it.
