The stars have made it clear - they will no longer tolerate malicious gossip or rumors spread by faceless internet gossipers. Celebrities are using the law to have the lying gossipers fined or jailed for libel.

Singer and actress Baek Ji Young suffered a miscarriage in the second trimester of her pregnancy last June. She was met with a baseless and spiteful message on an internet forum. As it turns out, she filed for police investigation against the author of that message for defamation and causing mental stress.

Her entertainment company stated regarding the filing, "The fact that your true identity is shielded on the internet does not mean that you are able to defame and harass celebrities without consequences. We will investigate with the police, sue, and bring the law to the people who think they can get away with hurting people who dedicate their lives to entertaining the media. As you know, we have had a surge of celebrity suicides in the past years. We can no longer tolerate libel as a passing joke. We hope that you can understand the reason behind our actions."

Many celebrities have suffered over the years, most prominently Lee Young Ae and IU. Actress Lee Young Ae was forced to explain her innocence against a malicious forum post that spread like wildfire on the internet. She has sued the person that posted the gossip that Lee Young Ae was Han Chae Young's mother-in-law. Her lawyer stated, "This matter is not a simple libel case. The problem is that others beside Ms. Lee Young Ae have been dragged into it for no apparent reason. There is no truth behind the rumors."

IU fought against the rumors that she was pregnant and was getting married in October. Her former entertainment company, LOEN Entertainment, announced that they had caught the perpetrator and that they will continue to work hard to keep their stars unmarred by these kinds of harmful rumors.

It used to be that celebrities just ignored gossip - besides, they argued, any publicity is good publicity. However, the constant barrage of gossip that comes at the speed of light through today's social networking sites has rendered the celebrities' patience very thin. Some celebrities have stated that they were depressed and considered suicides because of the libel of some immature internet posters. Entertainment companies will no longer idly wait for a rumor to die down. They are going on the offensive.
