What to Say When You're Asked, 'Why do you like K-pop?'

As an international fan who doesn't speak a lick of Korean, have you ever been stuck for answers when asked about why you like K-pop?

If you're anything like me, you barely have friends offline who appreciate Kpop the way that you do. And I get it, when put on the spot, it's not easy to come up with an organized answer that is universal. Especially if you have a million reasons to love Kpop but can't express your thoughts well. First thing you have to know is that you don't owe anyone an explanation for liking K-pop. It's not for everyone, but it;s for you and that is that. But if you're ever in a mood to shut someone up, here are some rebuttals to the most FAQs.

1) You can't even understand Korean.

That doesn't mean that it's not worth appreciating. One of the most universal things in this world (apart from math, can you tell I'm Asian, no seriously) is music. If you can listen to opera and appareciate it just for what it is, then Kpop is no different. Another thing, music uses a combination of composition and lyricism to evoke emotion, but even without lyrics, music can still be music. Like instrumental music. You can ask them why they listen to instrumental music when you can't even understand the violin. But be nice about it, of course.

You can even view this not as a language barrier, but as a means to learn a new language and culture through a fun kind of immersion. Because it's immersion in K-pop.

2) How can you even tell the members apart?

This is actually a valid argument. As politically wrong as this may sound to be people, even as an Asian, I was confused about how you could tell this guy from that other guy when I wasn't into K-pop. But then eventually, as I began to love them more and more, the distinction became clear. I guess it's like anything else, the more you stare at something the more you notice.

3) They're too produced and they don't even write their own songs AKA They're not "Real Artists".

Majority of the artists who try to find their crack to slip in in order to get into the industry have to begin somewhere and even those who are established still buy tracks from others, that doesn't lessen their validation. Whether it's a Western artist or idols in Kpop, this always happens. That's why they don't even hide the fact that they buy tracks off of other artists.

And if they still don't get it after all of this, then that's beyond your control, really. You've set a good argument, you've contributed your two cents. Just listen to your bias's new single and stay calm.
