K-Pop Rewind: Sechs Kies "Chivalry"

As K-Pop continues to make its mark on the musical landscape, there is even more sentimentality applied to the first generation of idol groups who forged the path back in the 1990's. Their influence can still be seen on the Korean music industry of today and the music of nearly two decades ago is still going strong.

November 15 marks the 16th anniversary of the second album from popular boy band Sechs Kies, Welcome to the Sechskies Land.

The group made their official debut in April 1997 with the single "School Song" and released their first album a month later.

The name Sechs Kies comes from the German word for "six crystals," and was meant to represent the boy band's six members. Fans affectionately referred to the group as 'Jekki' for short.

Before the end of the year, and fueled by widespread support for their new brand of pop, Sechs Kies dropped their second full-length album, Welcome to Sechskies Land, which comprised of 20 tracks including the title song, "Chivalry."

Sechs Kies's performance of the lead song won them their first No. 1 win on SBS's music show Inkigayo on December 7 of that year.

"Chivalry" and the second album solidified the idols' position in the industry and by the time the year-end awards shows rolled around, their fame was undeniable.

The song and video seem altogether dated when compared to the K-Pop of today - baggy clothes, wacky hairstyles, and animated choreography that is playful yet not nearly as tight as the routines performed by contemporary idols - but it is energizing and catchy.

However, despite the retro feel, and the fact that the group split just three years later, Sechs Kies remain an incredibly influential group on today's K-Pop.
