Surface 2 Review, Comparison: Windows-Powered Tablet Pitted Against Camera, Speed, Design & Other Features W/ Nokia Lumia 2520

Nokia Lumia 2520 and the Microsoft Surface 2 are the only Windows RT-powered tablets in the market today and we assess how they both fare in terms of specs and features.

Based on the review below, tell us - do we really need two Windows-run tablets in the market? Or one is enough?

The main reason, according to the writer is that, vendors like Asus have found a way to offer a full Windows 8.1 tablet for a lower price. There are not enough reasons for Windows RT, and another vendor hopping into the same OS bandwagon.

The issue with Microsoft’s Windows RT platform is the app environment. There is a lack of apps and missing legacy program support, CNET suggests.

The Cameras. Similar to smartphones, cameras has become a deal breaker and a centerpiece feature even for tablets. The Microsoft Surface 2 has a front-facing camera rated at 3.5MP and is the sharpest, most colorful camera on the tablet thus far. The 5MP back camera only adds to the power of the Surface 2’s camera specs.

The Lumia 2520 takes a different approach. It features a 2MP front camera and a 6.7MP back camera. This makes the Surface 2 having a better camera overall, possessing above average specs, while the 2520’s rear camera has an edge over the 5MP back camera of the Surface 2.

As usual, this should take into account that though cameras are important, it’s not the only spec being scrutinized

The Speed. As usual, in a world of instant gratification, the ability to process data and commands faster is a huge deal for any device. The Surface 2 houses a 1.7GHz Nvidia Tegra 4 processor while Nokia Lumia 2520 has a 2.2Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. The Tegra 4 is amazing for navigating the OS, quickly decoding streaming video and loading apps.

The Nokia Lumia 2520’s processor has proven itself in the Kindle Fire HDX, it has virtually tied with the Nvidia Shield and the Snapdragon chipset has beaten every other processor when it comes to performance. CNET notes that when it comes to gaming, the Nokia Lumia 2520 is a more capable gaming machine.

The Design. Microsoft Surface Mini 2 is very much similar to its predecessor in terms of overall look and feel but with an added kickstand angle. CNET notes that the silver-gray finish is “pleasing to the eye” and overall has an incredible feel.

The Nokia Lumia 2520, on the other hand, has a more curved design and feels more compact and lighter compared with the Surface 2. There’s no built-in kickstand for the Nokia tablet.

The Surface 2 has a 10.6-inch screen, while the Nokia Lumia 2520 has a smaller 10.1-inch screen. Both displays have a resolution of 1,920x1,080-pixels. Both screens employ techniques that extend the quality and presentation value beyond sharpness, CNET noted.

Microsoft Surface 2 starts at $449 for 32GB of storage and the Nokia Lumia 2520 still has no definite price and release date. It will not be to far-off, however, for Nokia to make sure that the price of its flagship tablet is not much higher than the Microsoft Surface 2.

Microsoft has reported great interest on the device with many of its initial set of accessories running out even before its official shipping date
