Retro K-Pop Playlist:A Look Back On The Best Of Big Bang's Taeyang

Big Bang's Taeyang has returned to the United States to headline the MTV Music Experiment 2.0 performance in San Francisco. Taeyang is a consummate performer who last wowed American audiences as part of the 2012 Alive Tour which made stops in Los Angeles and New Jersey. From his extensive time as a YG Entertainment trainee until the present day, Taeyang has demonstrated growth as a vocalist, musician, and dancer. Whether he is performing with G-Dragon, with Big Bang, or as a solo artist, it clear to see how Taeyang is a ray of light within the K-Pop industry.

Taeyang began to train at YG Entertainment at the young age of twelve with G-Dragon as a fellow trainee and companion. Originally, YG intended to release the artists as a hip hop duo and they became known as GDYB. However, YG responded to what was becoming a change in Korean musical trend which was moving away from hip hop back to male groups, as exemplified by the formation of Super Junior by SM Entertainment's Lee Soo Man in 2005.

Prior to the current formation of Big Bang, Taeyang trained also trained alongside BEAST and Trouble Maker member Hyunseung who was dropped from the group during the Big Bang documentary. Big Bang, as it is known today, went on to debut in 2007.

By 2008, Taeyang had established himself as a key component of Big Bang. He released the EP Hot, which featured production by YG Entertainment's CEO Yang Hyun Suk, as well as 1TYM's Teddy, producer Kush, and fellow Big Bang member, G-Dragon. Hot delivered the hit songs Only Look At Me and Prayer. By the time he performed in a piano battle with Xia Junsu, he had received acclaim as both a group member and solo artist.

2009's Gayo Daejun provided a retrospective on the career trajectory of Big Bang's leader G-Dragon and Taeyang. Aspects of their childhood and their trainee years was included in the footage. The two group members peformed the Big Bang hit Lies and Korean Dream.

In 2010, Taeyang released his first full length album, Solar. Two of Taeyang's best known songs, Wedding Dress and I Need A Girl can be found on the album.

The global success of Taeyang's solo return with Ringa Linga has proven that he has come along way as an artist. After looking back on the years of Taeyang, it is clear to see that his performances just keep getting better over time and that he has evolved into one of the most well rounded artists in K-Pop.
