Millions of spectators might have their hopes ruined because Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade 2013 is threatened by New York's notorious winds.

For Macy's 2013 parade, some of the helium-filled balloons included in the lineup are Spiderman, Pikachu, Spongebob Squarepants, and Toothless from 'How to Train Your Dragon'.

However, weather forecasts for the actual day of the parade hint that there is a possibility for winds to blow up to 40 mph. The possibility of having severe weather conditions might force Macy's to remove some of the gigantic balloons from its lineup.

According to the mayoral commission's guideline, large balloons are only allowed to fly if the winds do not exceed 23 mph. Such guideline was created in 1998 because of a related accident.

Meanwhile, the parade organizers claim that regardless of the weather conditions, the parade will still continue. As for the flight of the balloons, Macy's parade spokesman Orlando Veras claims that it is too early to make decisions whether they will pursue the plan: "On Thanksgiving morning, Macy's works closely with the NYPD, who, based on real time weather data and the official regulations determine if the balloons will fly and at what heights."

Parade organizers are more careful now especially after the 'Cat in the Hat' incident in 1997 wherein the six-storey balloon uncontrollably slammed into a light pole. Because of the debris, four spectators have been injured and one of them went into a month-long coma.

In 2005, M&M balloons similarly swept out of control leaving two sisters with minor injuries. Recognizing the risk that the balloon brings, Macy's promised to enhance its training of balloon handlers especially in inclement weather.

For this year's parade, each balloon will have 90 to 106 handlers instead of the typical 50. Light poles in Time Square were similarly adjusted in 2006 to avoid accidents.
