Angelina Jolie On A Mission To End Sexual Violence In Warzones On A Summit To Be Held In London – ‘Our Goal Must Be To End The Use Of Rape As A Weapon Of War,’ UK Foreign Secretary Says

Angelina Jolie will be joining the Foreign Secretary of UN to a global summit, which will be held in London next year. The summit intends to demand "justice and respect" for wartime rape victims, William Hague announced in a statement.

The Hollywood actress has been campaigning with Hague against sexual violence, as a UN special envoy for refugees.

The London summit will be attended by representatives from 137 countries globally, which signed a British-led statement that any sexual violence in war zones will never be taken for granted again for the sake of peace treaties.

"We intend it to be the largest summit ever staged on this issue," Mr Hague said. "We want to bring the world to a point of no return, creating irreversible momentum towards ending warzone rape and sexual violence worldwide."

The Foreign Secretary has paid tribute to Angelina Jolie for her efforts in helping the world become aware of the sexual violence problems going on.

"The United Kingdom has a seat at all the world's top tables of diplomacy -but this cannot be tackled by governments alone."

"We have to change attitudes worldwide, and her role is indispensable."

On a statement made by Angelina Jolie earlier:

"This summit is long overdue. The goal must be an end to impunity, and justice and respect for the survivors of these horrendous crime," she explained.

"We are committed to see that through no matter what it takes, and I hope other countries will take part and live up to their responsibilities."

Mr Hague on his statement said that:

"I will never forget meeting young women in a hospital in Goma so damaged by rape that they required surgery

"Or the woman in a refugee camp there who said they were being 'raped like animals'.

"Or male survivors in Sarajevo, who twenty years on still live lives shattered by trauma.

"Or meeting women in refugee camps in Darfur who were raped collecting firewood.

"What they all had in common was that, unjustly, they bore the stigma and shame and loneliness, while their attackers walked free and unpunished."

He was serious when he said that, "This issue is not about politics, but about our common humanity. And it is not enough to be united in condemnation of it, unless we are united in action against it."

The Foreign Secretary explained that rape was being used "as a tactic or weapon of war - to terrorise, to humiliate and to ethnically cleanse."

"Our goal must be to end the use of rape as a weapon of war," he said. "No longer treating it as an inevitable consequence of conflict but a crime that can be stopped."

The campaign against sexual violence in war zones was launched by Mr Hague after meeting women who has fallen victim to such violence and whose lives were shattered by sexual crimes but were not offered any justice.

A horrifying estimation of 400,000 rape crimes were purposely carried out in Rwanda and tens of thousands more in Bosnia, but only a few people were prosecuted, since sexual violence was considered "inevitable" or it was disregarded in cases that a prosecution would put peace at risk.

Doctors, judges and police officers who were able to work in warzones will be participating in the three day event to share their knowledge in protecting women and stopping sexual attackers.

The summit will also include members of the unique British task force focusing in the field of sexual violence prosecution that was launched to train common people and military authorities in war zones on how to safeguard people from such crimes, help victims recover and punish sexual crime offenders.

"We will ask all the countries present to make real practical commitments," said Mr Hague, who began working on the initiative two years ago. "We will ask them to revise their military doctrines and training, and their training and operations on peacekeeping missions."
