A coach known for his rants during press conferences might have left the New York Rangers franchise in a negative way, but he left his mark, coaching the team to the best record in the Eastern Conference two seasons ago. With a condensed season a year ago because of a lockout, Tortorella couldn't get the results he wanted in what ended up the Rangers getting eliminated vs the Boston Bruins in the second round.
The same season he led New York to first place, the Vancouver Canucks had the best record in the NHL. The coach of that team is the current Rangers coach, Alain Vigneault. "I am going to coach this game, hopefully kick their [butt] and get out of here," Tortorella said. "That's certainly not being disrespectful. We're so wrapped up in our seasons. We play tomorrow at 1 o'clock in Carolina, we're getting on a plane and going."
Vancouver has been struggling lately, only winning twice in its last 10. The Canucks did score five against the Ottawa Senators in their last game while the Rangers are coming off a 3-2 loss vs the Boston Bruins. Vigneault was very unhappy with their effort at TD Garden.
"We got exactly what we deserved," Vigneault said. "We had too many guys with their 'B' game on the ice against a Stanley Cup finalist, a team that was obviously not happy with their performance [a 6-1 loss Wednesday to the Detroit Red Wings]. Our lack of consistency has been an ongoing issue here with a few of our players and we're a .500 hockey team right now, and that's definitely not good enough."
Cam Talbot will make his home-debut for the Rangers as he will get the nod at goaltender while Roberto Luongo will be between the pipes for the Canucks.
