‘Bond 24’ Rumors: Benedict Cumberbatch Could ‘Never Play James Bond’ After Daniel Craig, ‘Sherlock’ Co-Creator Says

"Bond 24," the next installment in the James Bond series, will star Daniel Craig as the agent 007. But who can we look to as a future contender for the James Bond role after "Bond 24" and Daniel Craig's retirement? According to "Sherlock" co-creator Steven Moffat, not Benedict Cumberbatch.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Moffat said that neither Benedict Cumberbatch nor Matt Smith would make good James Bonds, though Moffat has worked closely with both actors.

"Benedict and Matt are both fascinating actors - they're never going to play James Bond, they're not leading men, they're not Brad Pitt. They'll always chose the interesting script over the glamorous part," Moffat said, Entertainmentwise.com reports.

"But that's good. Stars tend to have very short careers, while Ian McKellen will be working until he's 80, and they have that quality."

While we would assume actors would kill for a coveted role like James Bond, it seems Moffat believes Cumberbatch's inability to fill Daniel Craig's shoes is only a measure of his talent.

Moffat is the esteemed writer of "Sherlock" and "Doctor Who."

Daniel Craig has signed on to the next two James Bond films, unofficially titled "Bond 24" and "Bond 25." "Bond 24" currently is planned for an Autumn 2015 release. Sam Mendes will also return to direct the next installment in the James Bond franchise, which is rumored to be titled "Devil May Care," Yahoo! reports.

Naomi Harris will return as Moneypenny. She revealed in an interview with Total Film that she believes Sam Mendes is absolutely crucial for the next James Bond film, Yahoo! News reports.

"I'm so relieved," Harris said. "He chose me and had a vision for my character. I'd feel really weird working for someone who hadn't chosen me and didn't have that same vision."

"I just want him to see it through," Harris continued. "I feel like 'Skyfall' is one part of a continuing story. It needs completing and it needs the same storyteller."
