Retro K-Pop Playlist: K-Pop Stars Sing English Covers Of Christmas Favorites

2013 appears to be the year that almost every K-Pop label has entered the field with new Christmas music. With songs like Romantic J's Love Falls and EXO's Miracles in December, there is a variety of choices for audiences to choose from. However, the holiday season also provides an opportunity for artists to try their hand at singing covers of Christmas classics. With imaginative staging, these heartfelt renditions of the standards are as entertaining as any of the newest releases.

Due to the range of MBC and SBS' online libraries, classic K-Pop footage can be found on YouTube. Each maintains the best online catalogs for K-Pop performances and produces some of the largest Christmas programs dedicated to K-Pop. In 2003, Rain performed Wham!'s 1984 hit Last Christmas for MBC Music Camp. The solo artist soulfully delivered the performance while incorporating canes in the choreography.

Female vocalists Big Mama are known for having great vocal ability despite not posessing what are  considered traditional visuals for the Korean pop market. Big Mama's vocal depth made them ideal for singing Christmas songs. In 2005, the group released the critically acclaimed Christmas album, Big Mama's Gift. Big Mama performs a melodic a cappella rendition of We Wish You A Merry Christmas.

J.Y. Park is accompanied by female vocalists Park Jung Hyun, Lyn, and Youn Ha for the 2007 performance of Santa Claus Is Coming To Town . J.Y. Park is on the keyboard, highlighting his musical skills, while the vocalists perform back up and have an opportunity to showcase their talent.

SHINee opens the 2008 Music Core performance with a Korean version of Silent Night, which then segues into a joint stage with female group KARA for Jingle Bell Rock. SHINee's Silent Night is aurally beautiful and provides a great contrast to KARA's performance. Big Bang's Seungri and Daesung also look incredibly young as they host the episode. Big Bang would later perform Sunset Glow for the episode.

Big Bang gives the Donny Hathaway hit from 1970 This Christmas a modern K-Pop spin with hip hop breaks from G-Dragon and T.O.P.  The hip hop portion of the song is from the Big Bang song Make Love. The stage was performed in 2008 for SBS' KJE Chocolate.

Within the next two weeks,  music chart programs will become more inundated with holiday stages. When K-Pop artists sing Christmas standards, they provide their own unique spin on songs that are timeless. With the twelve days of Christmas here, holiday songs can provide a soundtrack for decorating and parties. What is your favorite Christmas song and has your favorite K-Pop artist covered it?
