BEAST’s Yong Junhyung, Is He a Composing Idol or a Musician? Is There a Difference?

The terms composing idol and singer songwriter mean the same thing, but they have a completely different feel to it.

BEAST's Yong Junhyung worked as a producer of their last album Shadow, and has been recognized as a composing idol. He'll be coming back on the 13th with a solo album, and throw in his card as a competitor. Born in 1989, he's at the age when his expressions are very sensitive and trendy. However, he's contributed his own unique style to the dark hip hop genre with the song "Flower," and has directed everything from the song and choreography to the styling, and is making a name for himself as a musician.

The singer is a songwriter that is growing step by step.

Yong Junhyung began to receive recognition for his composing skills just last year with the hit song Yang Yoseob's "Caffeine." The song held its place at the top of the winter charts for a long time, and is a rhythmical yet sweet song that complemented Yong Junhyung's style very well.

BEAST's Shadow album, which was released earlier this year, is a song that sheds light into Yong Junhyung's dark sensitivity. Unlike the usual friendly and approachable image that most boy groups have, BEAST went a different route and appealed to the listener's feelings by portraying themselves as men who have been hurt. Yong Junhyung had a hand in helping compose every one of the songs on the album, and put himself out there as a producer. Even still, he didn't lose his popularity as an idol, and has been praised for that. This album's songs "Will You Be Alright" and "I'm Sorry" ranked at the top of music charts.

His music has been approved in other works as well. The song "Right There," which he passed along to singer Shin Ji Hoon, also made the music charts.

He worked with his music partner Kim Tae Joo for his song "Flower," which is bizarre and gloomy, and has a certain aura about it. He utilized the electric piano to for a sad tone, the saxophone for a sexy tone. They go along well with the lazy rap and dreamy melody line to create a dark hip-hop style. Yong Junhyung not only has great ideas, but has the ability to control all aspects to create a work that fits in with his concept.

Yong Junhuyng went through a bizarre transformation.

As an idol group, BEAST is fairly regular, and maybe that's why his solo song seems that much more bizarre. He compares the girl he once loved to a flower, and sings lyrics such as, "Will you still be fragrant when time passes, time will pass, but your body's fragrance will still remain." The strange and bizarre scenes in the lyrics come to life in his music video, and it's not a common sight, that's for sure.

Instead of a melody that catches your attention upon first note, the song has a dark and deep emotion that carries throughout the span of the song, and is rather experimental compared to the songs "Caffeine" and "Will You Be Alright."

Rather than conforming to the norm, Yong Junhyung is trying very hard to express his own color as a musician and to be recognized as an all-around player. An agency rep stated, "Yong Junhyung has participated in everything from the planning, singing, rap, performance, lyrics, composing, and producing. He is trying to prove himself as a musician."
