Undefeated No More: Adrien Broner Knocked Down By Marcos Maidana; "The Problem" Loses Title By Unanimous Decision

In one of the most entertaining fights of the season, one of boxing's most flamboyant (read: arrogant) fighters crashed down to earth (the canvass) and lost his welterweight title in the process.

Adrien "The Problem" Broner was undefeated and almost untouched when he stepped in the ring. After getting knocked down and almost out twice, he left with a bloodied nose and a shattered pride.

Marcos "Chino" Maidana is a brutal power puncher from Argentina. He is no fan of slick tactics that Broner employs. From the opening bell, Maidana had three things in mind: Attack, attack and attack.

Broner was visibly rattled by Maidana's flurry. The crowd in San Antonio's Alamodome chanted "Chino! Chino!" Maidana's nickname. In the second round, Broner tried to fight back, but was met by a crushing left hook that sent him crashing down, clutching the ropes before falling on the canvas.

The champion was not about to give up that easy. He continued to fight despite a bleeding nose and excited chants from the crowd, giddy for an upset.

The judges scored it for Maidana, 117-110, 116-109 and 115-100. Unanimous decision that gave Maidana the welterweight title.

Broner, who looks up to Floyd Mayweather Jr and calls him big brother, had no choice but to admit defeat. He refused to have an interview with the press after the fight, but had a private interview with Showtime network off the air.

Quoted from ESPN: "All I can do is go back to the drawing board and come back and fight my ass off," Broner said. "I'm OK. Things happen. I fought a helluva fight, but he was the better man tonight. We can rematch it anytime."

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer had to agree: "I think it was an unbelievable performance. You just saw that Maidana was not going to be denied. He just wanted it more. Broner has to go back to the drawing board. His defense clearly didn't work.

"It was Maidana's night. It was his biggest night and opens the door to many great fights."

Many boxing fans would love to see more of Maidana's gung-ho, devil may care gameplan, which he admitted himself: "The plan was to fight any which way we can do it, and we won," Maidana said through a translator. "This win is very satisfying to me. My plan was to win with my heart and keep going forward. Every time I landed a punch, I felt like I was hurting him."
