Florida High School Named After Ku Klux Klan Founder Wants New Identity; What's The New Name?

Ku Klux Klan is one of the most fearsome groups for black people for almost one century starting on 1865. For a high school in the state of Florida, being associated with any of the names connected with such far-right organization is something that they cannot stomach. And so, Omotayo Richmond, a Jacksonville resident, started a petition on the website Change.org to have their school's name changed and was able to collect more than 160,000 signatures.

The wish of the black-dominated school Nathan B. Forrest High School to have their name changed has been finally granted as Duval Superintendent Nikolai Vitti decided to give its people the opportunity to conduct such alteration.

Nathan Forrest is recognized as the first grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, which is classified as a hate group by the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center. It was also regarded as a vigilante group who targeted freedmen and their allies, with the aim of bringing white supremacy by murdering blacks and Republicans.

"It is clear that the Nathan B. Forrest name represents disparate views that have led to a cloud of divisiveness that we have had an opportunity to address and remove," Vitti said shortly after the announcement was made.

The school hasn't come up with a new name but they are expected to pass a list by January, which should be granted by July 2014.

"I'm really glad that we had the opportunity to smash some old paradigm of hate and racism here," Richmond said shortly after getting the grant.

"This city is too beautiful for that blemish to be on it."
