As Brian Boitano Comes Out As Gay Before 2014 Sochi Olympics, Will Other Figure Skaters Join In Protest Of Anti-Gay Propaganda Laws?

Olympic figure skating champion Brian Boitano has come out as gay in preparation to be a part of the 2014 Sochi delegation representing the U.S.

Along with Billie Jean King and Caitlin Cahow, Brian Boitano will be the third gay member of the delegation to travel to Sochi.

"I am many things: a son, a brother, and uncle, a friend, an athlete, a cook, an author, and being gay is just one part of who I am," said Boitano in a statement published by USA Today.

"First and foremost I am an American athlete and I am proud to live in a country that encourages diversity, openness and tolerance. As an athlete, I hope we can remain focused on the Olympic spirit which celebrates achievement in sport by peoples of all nations."

And as Brian Boitano comes out, more pressure is being put on Russia by the Obama administration against its anti-gay propaganda law.

As the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics looms closer, Brian Boitano will not be the only gay athlete traveling from the U.S. to Russia. Although many choose not to talk about their personal lives, several prominent male figure skaters are rumored to be gay.

However, given the immense political pressure surrounding the anti-gay laws in Russia, whether an athlete chooses to come out will be even more polarizing.

According to Washington Post, President Obama, Vice President Biden and the first lady will not attend the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, with everyone taking this as a direct protest against Putin and his anti-gay discrimination.

As Brian Boitano comes out, will other join him?
