$1M Picasso Painting For $138 Raffle Ticket; Businessman Joins Charity Event Knowing He Will Win?!

Philadelphia businessman Jeffrey Gonano won a Picasso painting in an online raffle valued at around $1 million for a mere $136. But apparently, he already had an inkling that he could possibly win.

When his girlfriend, Gloria Spataro, learned about the news, she could only shake her head in amazement.

"He thought the odds were actually pretty good compared to something like a lottery," Spataro told the Associated Press. "He said, 'This will be my only chance to actually own something like this.'"

She even thought that he was joking when he revealed the news to her.

Gonano, who mans a family business involving fire sprinklers, said that all he wanted was to have something to hang on the wall of his new home. Now that he has a masterpiece in his hands, he wasn't sure if his house is the right home for a Picasso.

"Maybe I'll lend it to a museum and let them put it on display rather than putting it in a vault, so other people can enjoy it. It all depends. I don't know what the taxes are or anything," Gonano said in an interview with Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

The artwork was from Picasso's cubist period. Finished in 1914, it was dubbed "Man in Opera Hat." The painting was purchased by an anonymous donor from a New York gallery and donated it to the organizers.

The organizers of the event revealed that they sold almost 50,000 tickets at $136 each and raised $3.5 million for the preservation of a UNESCO heritage site. The money will support the International Association for the Safeguard of Tyre.

What do you do to celebrate after winning a Picasso?

Gonano said it was nothing grand, just an intimate dinner with his girlfriend, their family and friends.

As for her girlfriend, Spataro said that a gift she gave to him from a Buddhist artist now seems insignificant compared to a Picasso, which is why she's glad she gave it to Gonano before he won the raffle.
