Jesse Jackson Sr. Demands Meeting Over `Duck Dynasty’ Anti-Gay Comments; Issues Friday Deadline

Jesse Jackson Sr. says "Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson's comments are an affront to civil rights.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who began his civil rights career under no less than Martin Luther King Jr., knows the devastating effects of prejudice. Jesse Jackson Sr. has been fighting for the rights of oppressed and under-represented people for generations. Jackson wants to take that fight right to the doorstep of A&E Networks and their sponsor Cracker Barrel.

Jesse Jackson Sr. wants the ban on Phil Robertson to stand. He wants a meeting to keep "Duck Dynasty" off the air and he wants to have that meeting before Friday. In a statement Jackson Sr. said "It is unacceptable that a personality who has been given such a large platform would benefit from racist and anti-gay comments."

Looking at the scope of history, The Rev. Jesse Jackson says Phil Robertson is worse than Rosa Parks' bus driver. Jackson says that Phil Robertson's anti-gay comments to GQ magazine were more offensive than what the bus driver who tried to force Rosa Parks to sit on the back of his bus in 1955 said. The bus driver was at least following state law.

In a reaction to the "Duck Dynasty" star's comments, Jesse Jackson Sr. said "These statements uttered by Robertson are more offensive than the bus driver in Montgomery, Alabama, more than 59 years ago. At least the bus driver, who ordered Rosa Parks to surrender her seat to a white person, was following state law. Robertson's statements were uttered freely and openly without cover of the law, within a context of what he seemed to believe was 'white privilege.'"

Jesse Jackson Sr. wants action. The Reverend is demanding to meet with executives from A&E and Cracker Barrel to uphold Robertson's suspension from Duck Dynasty. The Reverend Jesse Jackson gave the executives a Friday deadline.

Jackson leads the human rights group, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. The group is teaming with LGBT group GLAAD and the National Organization for Women, to urge A&E to keep Robertson off the air.

Cracker Barrel responded to the controversy by pulling all Duck Dynasty items from their shelves. According to a press release, Cracker Barrel put the items back on sale after customers protested.

The press release said "We respect all individuals' right to express their beliefs. We certainly did not mean to have anyone think different."
