Michael Schumacher Accident Update; Doctors Says His Brain Scan Is Surprising But He’s Not Yet Out Of Danger

Michael Schumacher, who sustained brain injuries after a skiing accident last Sunday, is now in 'better' condition but he remains fragile, say French doctors who examined him.

"The situation is more under control than yesterday but we cannot say he is out of danger," head anaesthetician Jean-Francois Payen told press at the CHU hospital in Grenoble City.

"We have won some time but we must continue an hour-by-hour surveillance... It is premature to speculate on his condition."

Dr. Emmanuel Gay, the hospital's chief neurosurgeon, added that more evaluation is needed to be done on the seven-time world champion because there are bruises "a little bit everywhere" in his brain after hitting his head on a rock after falling during a skiing game at the Meribel Resort within French Alps.

During the operation, which was done at 10.00 pm (2100 GMT) on Monday, doctors were able to remove a large hematoma or blood build up in the patient's brain.

"It was larger and more accessible (than others) ... We judged we could remove it without taking any risks," Gay said.

Professor Gerard Saillant, a brain and spinal injury expert who oversees the 44-year old German's overall condition said that they cannot be sure if Schumacher will show progress in the coming days.

"We are a little less worried than yesterday but I'm sure you understand that the situation could change this evening or tomorrow," said Saillant who is also the president of the International Automobile Federation Institute.

Meanwhile, high profile personalities have expressed their sadness over Schumacher's accident. Amongst them is German Chancellor Angela Merkel who said that she was "shocked" upon learning the unfortunate event and former British Formula One driver David Coulthard who thinks his colleague should receive more merit for taking the sport to new heights.

"I only hope Michael Schumacher pulls through so that he can see all the nice things people are saying about him," he said as quoted by the Daily Telegraph newspaper.
