K-Pop Rewind: Jaurim "Magic Carpet Ride"

Jaurim is one of the Korean entertainment industry's longest-running popular bands and their continued success is a tell-tale sign they are giving the music scene something original and fun.

Formed in the mid-1990's, Jaurim released their ninth full-length studio album, Goodbye, Grief, back in October, and as expected, it received high praise from critics.

The group's distinctive sound, a fusion of psychedelic rock melodies and the lyrical charms of indie pop, is brought to life by the superb vocal talents of lead singer Kim Yoon Ah who weaves each song into an expressive and compelling masterpiece.

Jaurim, which means 'Purple Rainforest,' was active in the Seoul indie scene for a while before hitting mainstream success with the single "Hey Hey Hey" from the soundtrack to the 1997 movie Man Holding Flowers.

With nine Korean albums, three other unofficial albums, and a handful of solo releases from Kim Yoon Ah, it is hard to pick a starting point for an introduction to Jaurim. Each release has been as dynamic and varied as the previous ones and every song carries with it its own unique personality.

A long-time favorite of many current K-Pop idols, rockstars, and songwriters, such as G-Dragon, FTIsland, and T-Ara, Jaurim is often counted among South Korea's most influential groups of all time.

While every K-Pop fan is strongly encouraged to check out the breadth of the group's musical catalogue, a good place to start is with Jaurim's biggest hit of 2000, "Magic Carpet Ride."

Included in their third studio album, The Wonderland, Jaurim released "Magic Carpet Ride" on July 4, 2000, solidifying their popularity and place of honor in K-Pop history.

The song is upbeat and funky, and while at first listen it sounds like a pretty straightforward alternative rock tune, "Magic Carpet Ride" has a lot of personality - mix that with a fun chorus and Kim Yoon Ah's commanding stage presence and you've got yourself a pretty solid hit for the new millennium.
