K-Pop Rewind: Nell "Stay"

Nell has long been a fixture in K-Pop's rock band genre, and they are one of the few bands who seem to have no problem making that leap across boundaries to appeal to fans on all sides of the Korean music industry.

Formed in 1999, Nell had substantial indie success after performing in Seoul clubs for a few years and released two independent albums in 2001.

While regularly performing in clubs around the Hongdae area, the group gained the attention of K-Pop legend Seo Taiji who convinced the members to sign to Goesoo Indigene, a subsidiary of the Seo Taiji Company, officially becoming the first band to promote under the label.

Even though Nell eventually left Goesoo Indigene in 2006 for Woollim Entertainment, their first mainstream album Let It Rain, continues to be one of their quintessential releases and a fan-favorite.

Let It Rain hit record store shelves on June 12, 2003 and gives off the feeling of the Britpop, the genre Nell members Kim Jong Wan, Lee Jae Kyung, Lee Jung Hoon, and Jung Jae Won look to for a lot of their inspiration.

The majority of the album's tracks were written and composed by the group members during their underground days and with the production direction helmed by Seo Taiji, all eleven track were given a marketable update while remaining true to the group's innovative and original sound.

"Stay" was used as Nell's first title track and appears as the third track on Let It Rain. The song is a love story, but not in a traditional sense of it. The 'you' referred to in the song is not a woman, as one might initially think, but rather discusses a love affair with music.

More than ten years after bursting into the mainstream, Nell continues to be one of Korea's most beloved bands, as their 2013 EP, Escaping Gravity, and its lead single "Ocean of Light" are a testament to. Last year also saw the group's official debut in Japan with the release of a Japanese version of their 2012 studio album Slip Away.

Now with Woollim Entertainment merged under the mega-label SM Entertainment, many fans hope that Nell's success continues and the group is offered many more opportunities to share their music with the rest of the world.
