Ashley Wagner Becomes Michelle Kwan As Tragic US Figure Skating Championships Performance Puts Olympic Spot In Jeopardy

Last night, despite having "war paint on," former US national figure skating champion Ashley Wagner fell twice and placed fourth overall, putting her Olympic spot in jeopardy.

Based on the 2013 World Figure Skating Championships results by the American ladies (Ashley Wagner and Gracie Gold competed there), the US has three spots to give to the female skaters.

Right now, there are two possibilities. The top three figure skaters—Gracie Gold, Polina Edmunds, Mirai Nagasu—could be chosen to compete at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. The other possibility is that Ashley Wagner makes the team despite her finish.

Although the selection process takes into consideration the US Figure Skating Championships results this past week, others believe that Ashley Wagner will make the team "even if she's 10th."

According to USA Today, USFSA has emphasized this week that a skater's "body of work" will be considered, and Ashley Wagner has the most decorated resume of any of the top American skaters.

Of course, the controversy of selecting Ashley Wagner will no doubt ensue, especially if viewers only watched the competition last night.

A Nationals result like this has not been mired in controversy since 2006, where Michelle Kwan successfully petitioned the USFSA to allow her to compete at the Olympics, thus usurping Emily Hughes' spot on the team.

Either way, many are comparing the plight of Ashley Wagner to that of Michelle Kwan, and should Wagner be chosen, that means either Mirai Nagasu or Polina Edmunds will have their chance at Sochi taken away.

Will Ashley Wagner realize her Olympic dream despite her performance at the 2014 US Figure Skating Championships, or will she become the next Michelle Kwan and falter at the Olympic moment?
