David Cassidy Arrest for DUI: Former Teen Idol Was Driving To Rehab After Partridge Family Dispute Triggers Relapse

David Cassidy was arrested for DUI for the third time. Partridge Family star David Cassidy had a blood alcohol level that was reported as "more than twice the legal limit." David Cassidy's third DUI could result in jail time. On the Partridge Family, Shirley Partridge, Keith's mom, was the designated driver even though those were in the days before DUI. When Cassidy drove the bus it was usually on a dare from Danny and it was usually overrun by fans before it could get off the Hollywood lot.

It was Partridge Family troubles that sent David Cassidy on the bender in the first place. David was doing fine with his sobriety until he was overwhelmed by legal talk and needed a drink. Hey, we all would. Cassidy, whose daughter is "Arrow" star Katie Cassidy, was on his way to rehab when he was nabbed.

The California Highway Patrol says they pulled over David Cassidy because he made an illegal right turn at a red light night near Los Angeles International Airport on Friday night. David was arrested after the officer smelled alcohol in the rental car. According to the Sheriff's Inmate Information Center, Cassidy was released Saturday morning on $15,000 bail. David Cassidy is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 5.

David Cassidy's people blamed the DUI on stressful questioning by lawyers about "Partridge Family" profits apparently.

Jo-Ann Geffen, Cassidy's publicist, told Entertainment Tonight, saying: "David [Cassidy] just completed a stint in rehab and was doing very well in sobriety. He was in Los Angeles to attend depositions by Sony Pictures Television, respondents in a lawsuit filed by Cassidy in 2011 over what he claims are monies long due him from Partridge Family merchandise, home video, etc. After attending his and his manager's depositions, it appears as if the pressure led to a brief relapse. He was on his way to the airport to return to his home in Florida and to transitional rehabilitation. He plans now to return to rehab in an undisclosed facility."

According to the California Highway Patrol, David Cassidy was pulled over Friday near Los Angeles International Airport after a cop saw him make an illegal right turn against a red light. The California Highway Patrol statement says David Cassidy blew a .19%, which is twice the legal level, on an alcohol test. Cassidy was driving a rented Chevrolet Impala, the same make and model car he drove before he was Keith Partridge.

The former Keith Partridge was booked on Saturday Morning on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol in a Los Angeles jail. According to jail records, Cassidy was freed a few hours later on $15,000 bond. The CHP said the traffic stop happened off the 405 Freeway, near the Los Angeles International Airport.

The California Highway Patrol report said "Cassidy was observed making a right turn on a red light, in violation of a black and white regulatory sign indicating, 'No Right Turn On Red.'" The officer approached Cassidy, who was alone in the car. The report said "the odor of an alcoholic beverage was emitting from the vehicle."

David Cassidy was arrested last year for a felony DWI today in Upstate New York. According to published reports David Cassidy greeted the arresting officer with the phrase "What's new, pussycat," an old Tom Jones song. Maybe a little before the arresting officer's time because that seems to be what made him pull the former teen idol out of the car. It could have been worse. David Cassidy could have greeted him with his Partridge Family signature tune, "I think I love you."

The former Keith Partridge had a prior arrest for DUI and driving with an open container. David Cassidy, who lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, entered a no contest plea as a first-time offender in February 2011. His driver's license was suspended for six months and he was given one year's probation. Cassidy also had to attend a DUI school, pay a fine of $500 and serve 50 hours of community service. There is a video of David Cassidy failing his 2010 sobriety tests floating around on the internet.

Cassidy was arrested by Officer Tom Jones and Rensselaer County District Attorney Richard McNally said when Jones introduced himself, Cassidy said, "What's new, pussycat?" Which is a song by the sixties singer Tom Jones.

David Cassidy was the world's highest paid solo-live performer by age 21. David Cassidy's fan club was the most popular in the world, beating the Beatles, who he met, individually. Cassidy played Keith Partridge in the iconic seventies sitcom "The Partridge Family," where he played the eldest of five children of a widowed mother, who was played by Shirley Jones, Cassidy's real-life stepmother, who headed a band with his family. After four seasons, the show was cancelled and Cassidy launched his own pop music career becoming one of pop music's most celebrated teen idols. David Cassidy's hits include "I Think I Love You," "How Can I Be Sure," "Cherish," and "Lyin' to Myself."

Cassidy recently played an aging former teen heartthrob in the 2009 ABC Family sitcom "Ruby & the Rockits." The show was canceled after one season. He also guest starred as an aging former teen heartthrob on the TV sitcom "Malcolm in the Middle."
