Martin Freeman Was Almost 'The Doctor'? 'Sherlock' Star Talks Steven Moffat Series And Working With Wife Amanda Abbington As Mary Morsten

As "Sherlock" season 3 begins airing in America, actor Martin Freeman may have a connection to another Steven Moffat show—"Doctor Who."

While Peter Capaldi has begun filming as the new Doctor for season 8, a recent report by Doctor Who TV confirms that Martin Freeman was once considered for the role of the Doctor.

“I think my name was on an extremely long list once for a Doctor, but they’ve not asked me. I like the show, though," said Freeman.

Yet despite the fact that "Sherlock" and "Doctor Who" are in two completely different universes, the fact that Stevan Moffat works for both series has fans often craving a crossover of some kind.

This was evident when "Sherlock" star Benedict Cumberbatch was once rumored to appear on the "Doctor Who" 50th Anniversary Special as the Master.

Of course, neither the Master nor Benedict Cumberbatch ultimately made it into the 50th Anniversary, but could Martin Freeman or Cumberbatch appear on "Doctor Who" in another role?

So far, it appears nothing is in the works like that.

"Not that I know of. No, I don't think there's ever been any—no," said Freeman.

Recently, Martin Freeman completed "Sherlock" season 3 alongside Cumberbatch and his real-life wife Amanda Abbington, portraying John Watson's love interest Mary Morsten.

“I’ve done it a few times with Amanda before, but nothing as sustained as this,” Martin told Access Hollywood. “We’re playing partners in the show. She’s great.”

“I love it. It made the day go even quicker. It made it even more enjoyable. We have a natural kind of rhythm and chemistry together that I love. I really appreciate that part of my day. It made it easier.”
