G-Dragon Named 'Global Pop Icon' By 'The Hollywood Reporter'

Big Bang's G-Dragon has been named one of ten Global Pop Icons by the American entertainment industry magazine The Hollywood Reporter. G-Dragon shares the title with some of the most acclaimed artists in commercial and indie pop including Lorde, Ellie Goulding, Avril Lavigne, and Phoenix. The article equates G-Dragon with Justin Timberlake, in that the two have the association as being members of a boy band. However, The Hollywood Reporter staff writer points out that G-Dragon has, "credible musician pedigree and Kanye West's genre-bending artistic daredevilry". The comparisons made between G-Dragon and American music luminaries such as Justin Timberlake and Kanye West are just further examples of the increased reach that the artist and Big Bang have had into the Western entertainment industry.

The scope of G-Dragon's popularity and notoriety beyond Asia is mentioned, as well as his perception of his increased fame. G-Dragon goes on to say, "Before I was physically there in different countries to meet my fans in person, I didn't realize how famous I was". G-Dragon, as well as Big Bang, have become the focal point of American media outlets such as Billboard and Fuse, in recent months. G-Dragon states that he wishes to work with the prodigal American producer and hip hop artist Pharrell Williams, in the future. The Hollywood Reporter notes that G-Dragon has collaborated with artists from varying genres including Missy Elliot, Diplo, Sky Ferreira, and Boyz Noize. As Big Bang gears up for a comeback, it is without a doubt that there will be more attention outside of Korea focused on G-Dragon and Big Bang.
