Yuna Kim To Skate Before Mao Asada, Ashley Wagner, Carolina Kostner At 2014 Olympics: Low World Ranking A Fortune For Olympic Champion?

As the 2014 Winter Olympics draws closer, more details about the ladies figure skating competition has surfaced—particularly about Yuna Kim.

Recently Korea Times confirmed that Yuna Kim will be skating in Group 4 out of the 6 skating groups at the 2014 Olympics.

Generally, more elite figure skaters skate later on in a competition, but the reason for Yuna Kim's early placement is due to her relatively quiet Grand Prix season.

After suffering a metatarsal injury, Yuna Kim opted to skip her Grand Prix assignments, thus lowering her ranking to number 15 below skaters like Mao Asada.

What this means is all of her closest rivals for the Olympic podium—including Mao Asada, Julia Lipnitskaia, Ashley Wagner, and Carolina Kostner—will be skating after her, in Group 5 or 6.

However, some are taking this as a positive, since Yuna Kim reportedly prefers skating earlier in a competition rather than waiting for her turn. And by skating before her rivals, she will not suffer the jitters of seeing a competitor's performance before her own.

"It's not easy to do well every time, but I've made preparations enough to gain plenty of confidence," said Yuna Kim according to Yahoo Sports.

"Many people talk about winning two straight gold medals, but I'm not focusing on defending the title. I just hope to do everything I've prepared to do. As long as I can do that, I think the results will follow and I should be able to end my career without regrets."

This is not to say Yuna Kim does not have the material to win gold. Check out her winning performances at the 2014 Korean Nationals below.

Could Yuna Kim's early competition mean the rest of her competitors, like Mao Asada, will trail behind?
