Amanda Knox Retrial Conviction Could Lead To Extradition; ‘Ice Maiden’ To Be Detained In US Jail?

The retrial which found Amanda Knox guilty in the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher could eventually end up in an extradition, which means she could be detained in jail in the U.S.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Manual of the Department of Justice, the Italian Embassy in Washington DC will have to petition the US Department of State for the extradition of Amanda Knox. After a review, it will be endorsed to the Office of International Affairs of the justice department then forwarded to the US Attorney's Office in Seattle.

Meanwhile, according to Telegraph, Amanda Knox will not be free to roam around as the "Ice Maiden" can be detained in a federal jail, which in this case would be the Seatac Federal Detention Center located just five miles from her home.

The Amanda Knox supposedly earned the monicker "Ice Maiden" while in Italian prison for four years because she was so "composed" and did not show any emotion even when talking about Meredith Kercher, the former prison guard, Angela Antonietti, 65, told The Daily Mirror.

"She's a brilliant actress," the prison guard said.

The Telegraph said that should Italy make the extradition request, Amanda Knox would be incarcerated while the request is argued in the U.S. court.

Prof. Julian Ku, an expert in transnational law at Hofstra University, told Telegraph that Amanda Knox will be "held wherever the federal detainees in that area are held. She would be treated as any other extradition detainee."

"Typically, she would remain in detention. She is a little different, she lives there, so it's possible a judge could bail her but the government would oppose that. They typically don't give bail in these circumstances," he added.

Even if the arguments for the extradition process is relatively quick, the professor said that Italy might not seek to extradite Amanda Knox for a while.

Amanda Knox and former boyfriend, Rafaelle Sollecito, were found guilty in the murder of Meredith Kercher in 2007. The victim's body was found in their apartment with 40 stab wounds.
