Sugar Effect On Heart; Sweets Affect Your Heart Badly More Than What You Know?

Do you have a sweet tooth? You better tone down on it as early as now as a study suggests that sugar is one of the culprits on one's heart's decline.

Around 31,000 people took part in a research conducted by the CDC for the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, with the objective of examining "time trends of added sugar consumption as percentage of daily calories in the United States and investigate the association of this consumption with CVD mortality."

Researchers used a number of different lifestyle and physical variables to health outcomes.

The research has two findings, negative and positive. First, the good news. CDC found out that sugar consumption has decreased over the years. The bad news is that adults are more prone to heart diseases as 70% of the participants were found out to be consuming 10% or more of their daily calories from added sugar - and about 10% of consumed more than 25% of their calories from added sugar.

According to the research, sugar increase blood pressure and unhealthy blood fats like triglycerides and "bad" LDL cholesterol levels while at the same time decrease 'good' cholesterol.  Studies also suggest that sugar can augment the genetic effects of obesity that could enhance the heart risks that obesity genes were already threatening to begin with.

"Our findings indicate that most US adults consume more added sugar than is recommended for a healthy diet," the authors write as found on the JAMA Network website.

"A higher percentage of calories from added sugar is associated with significantly increased risk of CVD mortality."

The study concluded that:

Conclusions and Relevance  Most US adults consume more added sugar than is recommended for a healthy diet. We observed a significant relationship between added sugar consumption and increased risk for CVD mortality.
