K-Pop Destinations: Space-Age Seoul Featured In “You Who Came From The Stars”

When Jun Ji Hyun, Yoo In Na and her staff show up on the set of their action film in "You Who Came From The Stars," she walks into a building that looks as if it might be a flying saucer just about to speed away. The silvery structure could have been inspired by alien Do Min Joon's Joseon-era flying saucer. And it's easy to imagine that it might at any minute take off and return to his planet.

But the structure is more earthbound than it looks. The shiny enclosure is actually the Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Park, which is due to officially open in March.

The plaza and park will include a design museum, a multi-purpose park, a library and educational building. With five halls, it will be home to design events, exhibitions and conventions. Upcoming events already scheduled there include Seoul Fashion Week and an exhibit of traditional Korean art on loan from the Gansong Art Museum.

The park and plaza was built on the sites of a historic sports stadium and some flea markets. Even further back the land was used as a military training site in the Joseon era. The Plaza will offer easy access to the Dongdaemun Fashion District as well as the Euljiro Underground Arcade and the Dongdaemun History and Culture Park Station.

To get to the Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Park take Subway Line 1 or 4 to Dongdaemun Station, Exit 7.

For more information on the plaza, visit the Seoul Design Center at www.seouldesign.or.kr/eng. Or you can call 82 2 2096-0111.
