Bode Miller Makes US Ski Team, Lindsey Vonn Does Not: Sochi Olympics Will See ‘My Best Skiing,’ ‘Speed’ Will Win Medals, He Says

Bode Miller made his fifth Olympic team on Sunday, when it was announced that he would join the US ski team at the Sochi Olympics. Lindsey Vonn, however, will not be joining the skiers at the Sochi Olympics this year.

Five-time Olympic medalist Bode Miller made his fifth squad, while 2006 Olympic gold medalists Ted Ligety and Julia Mancuso also earned spots, as well as 18-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin. In all, the Americans had nine women and 11 men on the team.

One name that was notably absent was Lindsey Vonn, Tiger Woods' girlfriend. After tearing two ligaments in her knee at the world championships last February, she re-injured her surgically repaired ACL in a crash during training in November, and then sprained her MCL in France on Dec. 21, ABC News reports. Lindsey Vonn later decided to undergo another surgery, meaning she would not recover in time to compete on the US ski team at the Sochi Olympics.

The four-time overall World Cup champion was one of the team's "most dynamic training partner," so losing her might be a set-back, ABC News reports.

"The other athletes didn't really have the pace that they usually have with Lindsey," U.S. women's coach Alex Hoedlmoser explained. "Lindsey is always there in training and shows some incredible speed and you know when you train with her and you're close, that you're probably going to be close to being on the podium."

Meanwhile, Bode Miller is feeling good about the upcoming Sochi Olympics, which begins this Friday, February 7. According to Bloomberg, his recent results have been encouraging -- he placed third in the downhill and second in the super-G in a weekend of World Cup races in Kitzbuehel, Austria, on Jan. 25-26.

"My fitness is good, the skis are coming around," he told reporters in Kitzbuehel. "I'm hoping that I can put together my best skiing at the Olympics. I think if I do I definitely have the speed to win some medals."
