K-Pop Rewind: S.E.S 'I'm Your Girl'

Throughout the modern history of K-Pop, few groups seem to stand the test of time. Not many remnants of Korea's first generation of pop stars remain, but even after disbandment, some acts never seem to fade from the memory of their fans. S.E.S is one such group.

Heralded as the first real K-Pop girl group success story, S.E.S formed in 1997 under entertainment super agency SM Entertainment and the guidance of founder Lee Soo Man.

Along with their self-titled debut album, S.E.S released their first title track "I'm Your Girl" November 1, 1997 and skyrocketed to fame.

The fun dance-pop tune was featured as the first of ten tracks on the group's initial album and showcased the playful innocence of the new, young stars and drew comparisons to H.O.T, their ultra-popular boy band labelmates.

"I'm Your Girl" also contains a bonus for many die-hard K-Pop fans as the rap verse was done by none other than Shinhwa members Eric and Andy before their official debut the following year.

The song has long been held as one of the definitive K-Pop tracks that set the stage for countless girl groups to follow. Often referenced and covered by contemporary groups such as Girls' Generation and 2NE1, S.E.S and their breakout single will undoubtedly be a part of the repertoire for many singers in generations to come.

After its release, S.E.S's debut album sold approximately 650,000 copies and catapulted the group into the fame. Subsequent releases saw changes in the members' style and concepts, but popularity never waned and S.E.S remain one of the most successful Korean acts to date.

After five years and seven album releases in South Korea, the group disbanded leaving behind an unrivaled legacy. The three members have since ventured into solo careers both as singers and as actresses and still remain close friends.

Talks of a group reunion have been tossed around since S.E.S's tenth anniversary in 2007 and the three former members have appeared together many times since then, but only time will tell if a reunion album will ever come to fruition.

In the meantime, check out how S.E.S got their start and led the way for the hundreds of Korean pop singers who followed in their footsteps with "I'm Your Girl" below.
