How G-Dragon Uses SNS To His Advantage

"Twitter is a waste of time" said former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Celebrities often express themselves through a few words via various SNS, which get lost in the huge crowd of posts by other people. However, G-Dragon is the exception. He has 2.6 million followers on Twitter and 2.16 million followers on Instagram, and it's apparent that he boasts an immense impact with his words. He has followers such as Pharrell Williams, Rihanna, Lilly Allen, and Tom Brown. Pharrell Williams has even been known to directly mention G-Dragon and suggest that they work together. Just by this alone, it's evident that G-Dragon is noted by people in the entertainment industry all over the world.

In 2012, Rolling Stone reviewed G-Dragon's song "Crayon." In 2013 Complex Magazine and Fuse TV interviewed him. In 2014 Hollywood Reporter chose him as one of the Top 10 Global Pop Icons. He was the only Asian to make the list. Not only that, he's been handpicked as a leading icon, being reviewed and interviewed by many worldwide entertainment industry companies.

It would be an exaggeration to say that G-Dragon is an American pop star, yet. However the number of media sources that deal with it has been steadily growing in proportion. But his SNS position is definitely symbolic across the West, including the United States. The general public might not know who he is. But pop and fashion icons want to keep him close. To put it simply, he is 'hip.' He is one of the leading targets for 'hipsters.'

G-Dragon's method of using SNS explains why Hollywood Reporter and other K-Pop stars have chosen G-Dragon as an 'icon.' If we take a comprehensive look at G-Dragon's Instagram photos, it looks like something that belongs in a fashion magazine. He posts photos of his concerts across the globe, as well as a day in the life of a top star, his meetings with Chanel's chief designer Karl Lagerfield, and just of himself wearing clothes and accessories given to him directly by a top designer like Rick Owens.

G-Dragon can show off images that are only seen by top global stars through his SNS. His words, on the other hand, are short. On Twitter he will briefly mention which country is traveling to, or words like "Day and night... You have to live it right." He rarely responds to fans' mention of him. And he'll sometimes retweet opinions that he agrees with. Although he does reveal his daily life, he keeps distance from the public by saying only a few words at a time.

He attended the Chanel Haute Couture, and the public was first to see that Barbara Palvin first approached him. It might just be a cool thing to happen to someone, but G-Dragon's posts on SNS make it seem like a "GD edition" of Vogue. His life is pictured like something out of a magazine, and he reveals his daily life with a great sense of clear direction to the public, especially to those who have interests in parties, celebrities, fashion, and Chanel, but don't really know a lot about those subjects.

G-Dragon's SNS has become a figure that needs to be followed, and this is one of the ways he has a great influence. Complex stated in an interview with the top star, "The world's best fashion brands have been trying long and hard to sponsor G-Dragon." It's also been revealed that once G-Dragon is seen wearing a certain fashion brand, Asia's sales for that brand skyrocket. One big company producer stated, "G-Dragon is one of the only stars that can raise sales so significantly in Asia by wearing a high fashion brand."

But it's not just a matter of clothing. Big Bang's Japan Dome Tour performed a total of 17 times and gathered 770,000 people. It's not possible to have these kinds of numbers with just a few hit songs. It's because he has become a figure that the public really wants to see; that's how great his presence is in the world.

G-Dragon shows how he does it through his SNS posts. He continuously makes posts on his SNS about music, fashion, parties, concerts, travel, friends, and even his own lifestyle. G-Dragon is simply hip. There's nothing that's more important than being hip for the world's entertainment industry in 2014.

There's no way that G-Dragon is running his SNS consciously thinking about this. If it was something that could be calculated as such, then a huge number of celebrities wouldn't spend their time and lives on Twitter. This is something that is possible for G-Dragon because he possesses the music, fashion, and holds concerts that are of such great magnitude. Complex reviewed G-Dragon for his album, as well as the producer that worked with him for Coup D'etat and its songs. In another article, they explained G-Dragon's fashion brand of choice. G-Dragon and his agency YG Entertainment were active in their interview. Even during his busy schedule, G-Dragon took the time to make it out to the Paris Fashion Week, as well as Chanel Haute Couture.

G-Dragon is hip, and he has produced his life in a grand fashion so far. He knows which direction he wants to go, and he focuses on things that go with his goals. He knows that the masses have their eye on him, and are expecting great things. He's just living his life as he wants to. Of course this is necessary in using SNS to his advantage, and it's essential that he continually publish himself and promote himself through his SNS. It's a given that celebrities excel in music or acting. But if you want to remain as a star, you must be able to design your life and present it to the public in a charismatic and appealing way.
