‘Space Jam 2' Cast Rumors: Lebron James NOT Starring In The Sequel! Is The Entire Project A Hoax?

The great debate between Lebron James and Michael Jordan extends to the movie theaters as a rumored 'Space Jam 2' project tags King James reprising the role of His Airness.

The first reports on the project came from Deadline. The essential details:

"Broadcasting veteran Dick Ebersol's sons have come on board to develop the sequel to 1996 animated/live-action hitSpace Jam as a starring vehicle for James, the studio confirmed."

It seems like a good idea. The original "Space Jam" became a classic, even though it was only a mild hit earning $ 230million. However, basketball and animation fans still quote the movie as a pleasant, 90s era memory.

A full eighteen years later, the NBA has another transcendent star to rival Michael Jordan's magnitude. Lebron James, an ambitious, brand conscious superstar who wants to extend his reign beyond the basketball court seemed like the perfect candidate to star in the sequel. He actually even wants the role:

The pairing seemed perfect as the union between film and hoops is as strong as ever. There was only one flaw: the project did not seem to exist. Some of the first people to debunk the rumor was ESPN, specifically NBA Insider Brian WIndhorst:

On the other hand, IGN, which also posted on the report by Deadline and has since posted the tweets that refute the existence of the film, warned against a quick dismissal of the rumors:

"However, it's worth noting that no one from Warner Bros. is denying anything and Deadline is a trusted source when it comes to Hollywood scoops. On top of that, Rovell's use of the term "substantive discussions" can be read a couple of different ways - including that there have been some early talks, just no deals made. Deadline naming specific producers and writers on the project certainly indicates Warner Bros. is indeed developing Space Jam 2 and LeBron James is probably the intended star. But who knows, perhaps a different basketball star could ultimately take that slot?"

Deadline has yet to make an update of their exclusive report. Warner Bros. has no official statement on the matter, and Lebron James has yet to tweet about Space Jam from his personal account as of this writing.
