New York Knicks News: World Peace Is Free! Knicks Buy Out Metta, Beno Udrih; Will Another Team Pick Them Up?

The era of World Peace was short-lived. It is not about real life, it is the New York Knicks.

After the trade deadline, the teams can still make tweaks to their line-up by executing buyouts. As defined in Larry Coon's cbafaq.com, it is a 'divorce' between a team and a player. They can settle for an early termination of the contract for a negotiated amount and duration. All players on expiring contracts are eligible for this, and can sign with any team upon clearing waivers.

The Knicks gave their official announcement through Knicks president and general manager Steve Mills (from ESPN): "We are disappointed that it did not work out for Beno and Metta here in New York. We thank them for their contributions this season and wish them well."

Metta World Peace also gave his own statement: "It was a childhood dream of mine to play basketball professionally in New York City, and it has truly been a blessing for that dream to have come true. However, under current circumstances, my agent and I have agreed that being bought out would be the best option for me professionally. I would like everyone to know that whether I was on the court or off, I could not have been happier playing for and cheering on this amazing city, my city.

Lastly, I would like to thank all of the incredible fans of New York, as well as my teammates, my coach and the Knicks' owner for the wonderful opportunity to play in my hometown."

MWP is a native of Queens, New York. He is currently injured and it is likely that he will sit out the rest of the season. In agreeing to the buy-out, World Peace will lose his player option for next year worth $1.6 million.

Udrih, on the other hand, may wind up as a backup for a team hoping to make a playoff run.

Both players lamented their lack of playing time, but coach Mike Woodson said: "You can't play everybody, and if you're not playing you've still got to be a good teammate and be ready to play when called upon. Unfortunately, I couldn't play them ... I'll get back and talk to Steve and ownership [Sunday] sometime and look at the players available out there."
