NBA Free Agents 2014: Chris Bosh Is Too Good To Be A Third Wheel! Should He Be A Star On Another Team While He is At HIs Peak?

The NBA Free Agents take over after the Trade Deadline. The power now lies with the players, and for Chris Bosh, he is at an important crossroad in his career.

Chris Bosh is not new to being a main man. He was a star at Georgia Tech, which is why he was noticed by the Toronto Raptors and picked fourth in the loaded 2014 NBA Draft. When Vince Carter left, he became the franchise player for the Raptors. He reached his peak during his contract year-the 2009-10 season when he averaged over 24 points and almost 11 rebounds a game. He was truly one of the best big men in the game. (stats from Basketball Reference.com)

So many teams coveted him, but he was of course, overshadowed by other luminaries that year. He decided to join Lebron James and Dwyane Wade in Miami. He went from first option to third option, and still averaged 18 points and 8 rebounds.

Every executive in the NBA knows he can perform much better than what his stats show. He is better than half of the league's second options and even some teams' first option. What's more, he is unlikely to get a 'designated player' max contract that is limited to two players per team (the same limitation the forced Harden to leave OKC). Most teams with cap space would be ready to offer him that max contract. Is he content with staying in Miami behind Lebron and Wade?

Michael Wallace of ESPN responded to a chat question on Bosh:

"Bosh wants to be in Miami for the longterm. What will make this offseason interesting is whether the Heat will offer him a max deal for the next five seasons if he opts out of his current contract. LeBron is going to get a max deal regardless of where or when he signs. But Bosh is in a position where he has to maximize his earning power while his stock is at its highest point, which is right now. Of course, he could play it out one more season and opt out the following summer, or play the next two years and earn the remaining $44 million or so left on his deal."

Wallace is a Miami based writer, but he is considered objective enough to make that observation. Chris Bosh himself has declared that Miami is the best set-up for him and his family in terms of basketball and off-court matters. Still, for a basketball player, you only rake the cash in for a limited time and injuries loom to end your career prematurely. Bosh's time is now. These news items can be tempting. From msn.foxsports: "It seems most GMs feel Bosh (and not Anthony) is the second biggest potential prize on the upcoming market. But if James goes back to the Heat, Bosh will, too. If not, the Lakers are secretly interested, sources said."

It's winning versus individual stardom and more cash for Bosh. It's a decision worth waiting for.
