'Girls' Star Adam Driver To Play Villain In 'Star Wars: Episode VII'; Scheduling Issues Delay Casting Announcement?

Breakout "Girls" star Adam Driver was tapped to play one of the main villains in "Star Wars Episode VII" set to hit theaters on December 18, 2005. In terms of significance, think Darth Vader of the first three Star Wars movie.

However, Variety reported that the deal is not done yet but "Girls" actor Adam Driver is already close to signing in the J.J. Abrams-directed "Star Wars: Episode VII." The 30-year-old star was reportedly the first cast member officially announced by Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Studios.

The official synopsis wasn't released yet but episode 7 of the "Star Wars" will take off from where "Return of the Jedi" left off.

Lena Dunham, the creator of "Girls" also confirmed the news on Twitter:

"We're VERY proud of Adam Driver re: Star Wars. He's about to rip a hole in da force. Is that a thing? I guess I should see those movies?"

According to Variety, the delay in the annoucement of "Girls" actor Adam Driver's casting in "Star Wars: Episode VII" was due to scheduling issues.

Citing sources, the schedule between HBO's season 4 of "Girls" was not the only problem but also the future seasons. J.J. Abrams is set to film scenes for the latest installment of the "Star Wars" franchise in April at London's Pinewood Studios.

The Guardian reported that Harrison Ford, who plays Han Solo in "Return of the Jedi," has confirmed to be part of "Star Wars: Episode VII." The other original castmembers such as Mark Hammill (Luke Skywalker) and Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) also signed on to the film.

Adam Driver's career was made by "Girls" when he played the character of Adam Sackler. The actor was also part of other films that are well-received by critics such as "Inside Llewyn Davis," "Frances Ha" and "Lincoln."

In being named the main villain for "Star Wars: Episode VII," Adam Driver reportedly beat out Hugo Weaving and Michael Fassbender for the role.
