Review: Girls' Generation Live Up To The Hype On The Darkly Electro 'Mr.Mr.' [VIDEO]

Though they have earned legions of fiercely devoted fans by churning out light, peppy pop music, Girls' Generation take a chance and step towards the dark side with their new single, the deep electro track "Mr.Mr."

That's not to say the song is a somber one.

Quite the contrary, "Mr.Mr." moves along at great speed, but it's beat is heavier and the sound is more urban noir then anything they have attempted in the past.

The video also is more edgy, opening with what appears to be a plastic surgery operation room, as the members wield what appear to be Botox needles.

Although, they could be anesthesia needles too, as the Girls' Generation bandmates also hold jewel-incrusted hearts throughout the video, the bling-bling version of open-heart surgery perhaps?

The point is that beyond just exploring a new sound, the boundary-pushing visual innovation that characterized the group's early videos is back.

Beyond just the strange subject matter, the director creates an intriguingly disorienting effect in the "Mr.Mr." clip, just by using strange lighting and an artfully obscured frame.

It is the digital distortion that produces some of the video's most interesting images.

But, getting back to the sound of "Mr.Mr.," even in the sunnier, disco moments of the song, there is still darkness, almost a sound of desperation.

It's clear that if there is a moment of sunlight on the track that is sun that is poking through the dance club window after you have been partying there all night.

Yet, somewhere in there, the individual members still sound confident and victorious. In their clear love of performing they find and the resilience that makes "Mr.Mr." ultimately an uplifting sonic statement.
