FIFA World Cup 2014 Stadium Construction Delay Could Put Fans Under Threat, Official Says; Head Of Security Also Warns Of ‘Violence In The Stands’

It is no secret the FIFA World Cup 2014, which will commence on June 12, is one of the biggest sports event this year. It is no secret too that the host, Brazil, is running late to complete the preparations for the competition.

FIFA secretary general Jérôme Valcke has called out organizers in the South American country about the slow progress. He asked them to step up their efforts to make it before the deadline. As of today, Brazil has around 100 days to complete the works on Sao Paulo and Curitiba stadiums. They also still need to install IT systems in several arenas.

"To install the IT in a stadium, it needs at least 90 days and we have to work for all the people who have an interest, our commercial partners, our media partners, hospitality."

"The ball starts rolling on June 12 until July 13 and I think things will work well then but it is also true that whenever you receive something late, it becomes a challenge to make it ready in time," Valcke added.

While Valcke is worrying about the current problem, FIFA head of security Ralf Mutschke is worried about the possible effect of such delays. He thinks that because of the setbacks, they might have less time to prepare and assure the security of the event.

"For sure, late delivery of stadiums is making our lives more difficult. Normally, if they stay to the Fifa deadline, everything would be fine," he told the Telegraph.

"This is something we are facing, violence in the stands, so we have to be prepared for this as well," he said, insisting Fifa's ticketing policy made mass confrontations inside a stadium almost impossible.

"We have to be prepared to face huge protests in the streets, in the cities.

"This is what we're discussing with LOC [Local Organising Committee] security from Brazil, and also the security agencies, including the military police and the army."
