RT America Liz Wahl Explained Why She Resigned As Anchor; Network Hits Back Saying It Was Just A ‘Self-Promotional Stunt’

On Wednesday, Russia Today America news anchor Liz Wahl made headlines after she announced that she will resign from the company while on-air.

"I cannot be part of a network funded by the Russian government that whitewashes the actions of Putin. I'm proud to be an American and believe in disseminating the truth, and that is why, after this newscast, I'm resigning." said Wahl who a Washington, D.C. correspondent for the state-owned television station.

With this act, the journalists who claims to be of Filipino, Hungarian, and American roots became an internet sensation. In an exclusive interview with the Daily Beast, Wahl explained why she exploded on the set.

"When I came on board from the beginning I knew what I was getting into, but I think I was more cautious and tried to stay as objective as I could," she told during the interview.

"As a reporter on this network I face many ethical and moral challenges especially me personally coming from a family whose grandparents came here as refugees during the Hungarian revolution, ironically to escape the Soviet forces."

I think management is able to manipulate the very young and naïve employees," she says. "They will find ways to punish you covertly and reward those that do go along with their narrative."

According to the Daily Beast's James Kirchick, Wahl has been long planning to leave RT America.  She even reached out to Kirchick back in August for the same issue. However, things didn't go as planned because "she wasn't ready yet to quit."

Wahl' on-air outburst has put RT America in hot water. The company released a statement regarding the issue.

When a journalist disagrees with the editorial position of his or her organization, the usual course of action is to address those grievances with the editor, and, if they cannot be resolved, to quit like a professional. But when someone makes a big public show of a personal decision, it is nothing more than a self-promotional stunt.

In the end, the company still wished Wahl the best in her career.

"We wish Liz the best of luck on her chosen path."
