Phil Jackson New York Knicks, Close To Completing Coaching Deal Sources Say; Will This Prevent Carmelo Anthony From Leaving MSG?

Phil Jackson has been three years removed from a coaching gig in the NBA. Since retiring in 2011 after 11 fruitful years with the Los Angeles Lakers, the 11-time NBA Champion coach has stopped holding a drawing board. Despite this, fans still clamor to have him back, especially the beleaguered Lakers fans who blame coaching problem in their awful season. However, according to sources, the Hollywood team might not get their wishes fulfilled. Not because Phil doesn’t want to coach anymore but because one team is already ahead of them when it comes to courting the award-winning coach.

In a report by the ESPN, citing an unnamed NBA source, Garden chairman James Dolan has already held talks with Jackson to bring him in the MSG wherein he won two championships as a player.

The sports website wrote:

While a decision has not been made, Phil Jackson is leaning toward taking a front-office job with the New York Knicks, a source close to the team tells ESPN's Stephen A. Smith.

Jackson's role would be president of basketball operations, in complete control of all basketball-related matters, according to the source.

It is unclear whether the decision would include an agreement to coach the Knicks next season, the source said. A decision is expected sometime next week.

Knicks president Steve Mills had offered the head-coaching position to Jackson but he declined. The 68-year-old Hall of Fame coach has said that he would like to move into a front office and run a team.

Will Carmelo Anthony stay with Jackson possibly on the helm of Knicks operations?

Another big question for New York Knicks’ ‘rebuilding’ is Carmelo Anthony’s contract. With the possibility of having a multi-titled coach in the team’s office, will this make Melo stay? Here is what the 2013 scoring champions said.

“I heard it when I came in today. In the training room, that’s all that’s on ESPN so you see the stuff. But as far as me, personally I haven’t heard anything of that nature. So it’s hard for me to speak on something I don’t know about.”
