Amanda Knox, Raffaele Sollecito Retrial: Guilty Conviction Due To Media? “Foxy Knoxy” Gets More Publicity Than Victim Meredith Kercher

Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito's retrial sentence of 28 years and 25 years in prison respectively has seen news publications divided over whether the guilty conviction was due to media pressure as "Foxy Knoxy" is getting more publicity than murder victim Meredith Kercher.

The Varsity columnist Alice Corr believed that Amanda Knox's retrial was "condemned by the kangaroo court of public opinion," when the pinch of evidence worked with "a good slug of hearsay, conjecture and insinuation."

"I find the prosecution's arguments tenuous at best, and certainly not proof of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt," she wrote in an opinion column dated February 28.

"But it also happens that the prosecution evidence is weak to non-existent, implausible and illogical. Their most powerful argument seems to amount to: 'well if it wasn't them, then who?'"

However, Chris Elliot of The Guardian admitted that the publication received a letter signed by 108 people who accused them of being biased toward Amanda Knox when in fact the family of Meredith Kercher lived in UK but gets rare publicity.

He said the murder of the British student and the ensuing trial plus, Raffaele Sollecito and Amanda Knox' retrial was covered extensively by the publication.

"None of the complaints have focused on the news coverage and I think the Guardian's news stories are accurate, fair and balanced, with quotations from the Kercher family and their lawyer in the front-page story of 31 January, the day after the latest verdict was announced," he wrote.

The Amanda Knox' retrial has really entered US pop culture when "Girls" creator Lena Dunham referenced to "Foxy Knoxy" while recounting to Seth Myers on Thursday her experience with the TSA who detained her at the Los Angeles International Airport.

"I was so scared. I was like, They're gonna Amanda Knox me. I'm gonna go away for a long time. The criminal justice system is broken in this country. They put away the good people and let the bad people go free."
