NBA Lakers News: LA Upsets Oklahoma City Thunder Behind Jodie Meeks Career High 42 Points! Is The Streak Shooter A Keeper For Next Season? How About Coach D’Antoni?

A big shocker on a Sunday was the Lakers beating the Oklahoma City Thunder! After their most embarrassing loss, the Lakers bounced back strong beating the Best in the West.

Jodie Meeks had a career high 42 points as he outscored the entire Thunder team in the third quarter. The Lakers overcame a triple double performance by MVP candidate Kevin Durant who had 27 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists.

Pau Gasol had a good support effort with 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Tinseltown team while Russell Westbrook showed signs of his explosive athleticism with 20 points. Ibaka rounded out the Thunder trio with 21 points.

However, the bad side of Westbrook's game also showed up as he took a bad shot with the Thunder down by just 3 points, 107-110.  ESPN announcers commented that he should have deferred the crucial play to Durant.

ESPN research from Elias Sports Bureau stated that "this is the first time that the worst team in a conference beat the best team in that conference in March or later since April 18, 2001 (the last game of that season) when the Bulls (14-67) defeated the 76ers (56-25). Elton Brand led all scorers with 31 points in the game. NBA MVP Allen Iverson did not play."

"The Thunder hadn't allowed a 40 point scorer in the first 61 games. In the last two games Gerald Green of Phoenix and Jodie Meeks of the Lakers each topped 40. Last season only one player, James Harden, topped 40 vs OKC."

Meanwhile, on other Lakers news, ESPN had this tidbit on Coach Mike D'Antoni:

"The Lakers say they have no plans to make a coaching change right now but that might change when they take a look at Mike D'Antoni's resume at season's end. D'Antoni is in the midst of his 6th season since leaving Phoenix and he has still yet to win a playoff game."

The Lakers would not want to spend any more money by replacing D'Antoni at this point. The entire season is just one long audition for the role players (who are mostly on one year-expiring contracts) to be retained next season. Meeks proved his case as a keeper with this game, but D'Antoni is probably on his way out.
