Media reports say residents reported hearing a large explosion in an apartment building around 9 a.m. Wednesday The FDNY says the reports came in from around Park Avenue between 114th and 117th streets. The site of the explosion is near the Metro-North commuter railroad tracks, off the northeastern tip of Central Park.

It is unclear if anyone was inside the buildings at the time of the explosion.

News video from the scene shows hundreds of firefighters battling the fire and heavy smoke rising from the area. There have been reports that debris and rubble have been scattered all over the area. The smoke reportedly could be seen from miles away.

Witnesses said debris can be seen floating through the air from blocks away. Police on the scene could be seen wearing face masks. Marla Diamond from WCBS 880 reported that thick, black smoke was enveloping the area. New York City officials said the building is destroyed. The cause of the apparent explosion is not known.

One five-story building appeared to be reduced to rubble. A Spanish Christian Church and an Absolute Piano Repair shop were on the first floors of the buildings.

Marisa Aquino, who was at her apartment on 115th Street between Park and Lexington told NBC "I thought a train had exploded. There are a ton of firefighters and a lot of smoke. Cops and first responders are everywhere."

Metro-North service has been suspended out of Grand Central because of debris on tracks.
